MR. VEGAS DELIVERED AT THE STING NIGHTCLUB LAST WEEK SATURDAY JUNE 20, 2009

Trinidadian fans are still talking about the marquis performance that
Mr. Vegas delivered at the Sting nightclub last week Saturday. Mr.
Vegas took his set old school with a couple of Bob Marley and Dennis
Brown songs before cranking up the energy with his early hits such as
Nike Air, then finally going full throttle with Raging Bull, Tek Weh
Yuself and Hot Wuk as he had the 700 strong audience partying up a
storm.
Dancer Mystic showed up mid-performance to show the Trinis how to do
the latest Jamaican dance move, the Sassa Step, but the Trinidadian
males made woeful attempts at learning the dance, and provided comic
relief for the audience. Mr. Vegas closed his entertaining set
strongly with his runaway hit, I Am Blessed, marking a successful
night for the Jamaica and Barbadian-based promotions company, Big
Links Promotions. Earlier, Rastafarian firebrand Lutan Fyah had opened
the show with a blazing set full of hits such as Save the Juveniles
and St. Jago De La Vega.
On the previous night, Vegas had performed at a welcome party held in
his honour in Arima at the Fifth Element club. Over 200 people turned
up for a whirlwind 15 minute performance from one of Jamaica’s most
consummate entertainers. Mystic also teamed up with a girl to buss the
place with a series of sexy dance moves that moved male members of the
audience to throw US dollars onstage to keep them dancing. It was the
Trini version of a dance ‘pull up’ as they paid the girls to repeat
the ultra-sexy dance moves while they railed and shouted their
approval.
Mr. Vegas to perform in St. Vincent tonight June 27, 09 at a concert
called Insomnia.

QUEEN IFRICA’S ‘MONTEGO BAY’ WAS WORTH THE WAIT!

The anticipation, the crave and the suspense is finally over. The musical empress, Queen Ifrica, has finally released her eagerly awaited debut album, ‘Montego Bay’, appropriately named after the community from which she hails.
The album opens with T.T.P.N.C., (Tribute to The Pitfour Nyabinghi Center - located in Montego Bay). The song, produced by Tony Rebel, honours the elders within the Rastafarian community where Ifrica was raised. The reverential drumming and chanting compliments Ifrica’s chants, offering praises to the Most.
The sweet reggae melody of the title track, Welcome to Montego Bay is one that will immediately have listeners rocking to the bubbly feeling that the reggae-flavoured track gives, as Ifrica highlights some of the things that characterize her hometown.
The classic rhythm from the Rastafari anthem Satta Massagana is updated on Rebel’s production of Coconut Shell, a celebration of the Rastafarian sacred herb, marijuana, as Ifrica declares, “dah one yah red up mi eye… mi burn it dis morning as mi rise up… mi still dey up inna di sky, high, high…” The track allows listeners to “whole a joy and meditation” while bouncing to Ifrica’s lyrical rhymes on the smooth-flowing rhythm.
The ‘Fyah Muma’, who is like a Lioness on the Rise, asks, “are you ready, are you ready,” as she brings good music for fans whenever they call on her name.
Ifrica then changes her style of delivery by deejaying on Yad to the East, showing off her diversity, as she drops some fast-speaking lyrics that fans will surely appreciate.
The lovers rock that will take the minds of listeners Far Away is one that Ifrica expresses her romantic side. This single is among one of her more popular and much embraced singles from the album. Daddy, however, would be the single from the album that needs no introduction, as it is already one of the biggest hits of Ifrica’s career.
Don’t Sign is done on a dancehall rhythm which is easily identifiable. Ifrica here, shows that she can cater to a wide cross-section of audience.
Another track that has already gained in popularity is Keep It To Yourself, which is like a follow up to Daddy, as she continually defends the children through her music. Keep It To Yourself , produced by Donovan ‘Don Corleon’ Bennett, finds the Fyah Muma blazing against the increasing atrocities experienced by children in Jamaica and worldwide, and the corrupt forces unwilling to penalize such heinous actions.
It was then back to her African roots to “trample the beast” in Calling Africa, another Rebel production. Here, Ifrica sinjays amidst chanting, giving the single a unique twist.
Queen Ifrica’s ‘Montego Bay’ album is rounded off by tracks of a slower tempo, with In My Dreams, Streets Are Bloody and Daddy (Spanish Version) which allows listeners to fall into that meditative mood, reflecting on serious issues that plague the youths of Jamaica.
Overall, Queen Ifrica’s ‘Montego Bay’ was a well composed album that definitely delivered. It was worth the wait!

BROOKLYN FEST EMBRACES ELE

Dancehall’s flamboyant entertainer, the hard-to-contain Elephant Man, gave another memorable performance at the Fathers’ Day fiesta, Brooklyn Fest, held at the Floyd Bennett Stadium over the weekend.

The man who is known for keeping the 'dance' in the dancehall and maintaining an incredibly high energy level, was, to put it mildly, more than a handful. Ele, with his trademark lisp which his female fans have come to adore, entered centrestage at approximately 9:30 pm, right after another of dancehall’s extraordinary performers, Beenie Man. And, just as he did at the Giants Stadium in New Jersey, at the annual Hot 97 Summer Jam, Elephant Man gave a performance that bedazzled.

His thirty minutes on stage was powered by ‘E’ for energy and Brooklyn had no choice but to embrace him. Ele reeled off his big bad tunes one after the other, and, not surprisingly, the fans could sing each one word for word.
Bad Man Forward, Gully Creeper, Jook Gal Sweep, Nuh Linga and Bless You More were among the night’s offerings.

Elephant Man, who is one of the top acts confirmed to perform at Reggae Sumfest Dancehall Night in Montego Bay on Thursday July 23, leaves this weekend for a series of shows in the Caribbean. He is set to perform in Guyana, Tobago and then on to Trinidad.

‘MI VEHICLE CYAN DEARER THAN MI HOUSE’ SAYS FLIPPA

When flossing King, Flippa Mafia, scored number one last year with the hit single Dem Yah and Dem Yah, it was the signal that this deejay was “the one to watch”. And he has proved that this success was no fluke.

“It was a song that everybody liked instantly and it just took off and set my career on the right level,” recalls the deejay, whose single Unfinished House is kicking up a storm, musically and otherwise.

A very conscious song, the words coming from the lips of the flossing king makes the message much more impacting. In Unfinished House, Flippa states his case in no uncertain terms:
Mi vehicle cyaan dearer than mi house
Nor mi rims cyaan dearer than mi couch
Nuh man a hype ova unfinished house
And mi madda nuh waan lef Waterhouse

It was this single which brought the undisputed King of Flossing in contention with deejay Bounty Killer, whose mansion on the hills is ‘unfinished’. But Flippa insists that there was nothing personal in the lrics, he was just expressing himself the best way he knows how.

“But all that has been settled and it really just about music. My message is simply this: Flossing is all and good, but make sure that the important things like having a house, somewhere to sleep and those things are all sorted out before you spend money on car and bling,” the deejay stated.

Having been the brunt of much criticism for his champagne popping and drinking straight from the bottle or pouring it all over the stage while performing, coupled with his penchant for throwing out dollars, Flippa is intent on setting the record straight.

“I don’t have a house … I have houses,” he emphasizes. And, like I said in my song, my mother still lives in Waterhouse because that’s where she wants to live. But she can get the keys to any one of my houses whenever she wants. They are all hers,” declares the flossing king, who says that flossing is his way of life, it’s no pretence.

Flippa Mafia will appear on Reggae Sumfest Dancehall Night scheduled for Thursday July 23 in Montego Bay, Jamaica

LADY SAW SIZZLES AT SUMFEST LAUNCH

The recent launch of Reggae Sumfest on the lawns of Devon House in Kingston was a sell-off affair which attracted any and everybody connected to the music industry. The high rollers, the profilers and the wannabees all came out and strutted their stuff.
The night, all will agree, however, belonged entirely to Marion ‘Lady Saw’ Hall. Having recently secured a deal with leading cellular company, Digicel, as one of the faces of their new diva campaign, Lady Saw was a treat.
And if her performance was anything to go by, then Dancehall Night at Reggae Sumfest is a not-to-be-missed affair. Saw wore caps as both singer and deejay and left guests open-mouthed in amazement and clearly wanting more.
She performed a tribute to women, showed her skill at social commentary and then secured huge forwards as she rode the dancehall riddims with expertise. All the while keeping her act pristine clean, while acknowledging her gratitude to Digicel for inviting her to be part of their new campaign.
Lady Saw is one of the featured acts on Reggae Sumfest Dancehall Night scheduled for Thursday, July 23 in Montego Bay, Jamaica.

The Reign Continues For Mr. Vegas On Hype TV Chart

Vybz Kartel with Dollar Sign firmly grips the Shot To Watch title for one more week, he moves one spot in at #2 to leave #3.
“Ms Montego Bay” Queen Ifrica with Far Away steps in closely for the #3 position jumping places from #5.
Etana & Alborosie Blessings fell to #4 leaving its threatening #2 position while spending its fourteenth week on the chart.
Also for Konshens with This Means Money knock down to #5 out of #4 for which it peaked at.

QUEEN IFRICA PERFORMS ON WPIX MORNING SHOW

Queen Ifrica recently performed on New York’s WPIX morning show, as she appeared as part of The Caribbean Tourism Organizations Caribbean Week.

Ifrica, who was also celebrating the release of her debut album, ‘Montego Bay’ (June 16), performed Lioness On The Rise, singing: “You can call me by my name (I am ready to roll), once the rules remain the same (how the story’s been told), call me any time (never cop out) a lioness is on the rise, don’t you ever have doubt.”

Queen Ifrica and Tony Rebel are currently in the US promoting Ifrica’s new album, as the artiste has been engaged in a number of interviews on radio, television and also in the print media.

Queen Ifrica’s debut album is released by VP Records and features 13 tracks, including popular singles like Daddy, Keep It To Yourself, Far Away and Lioness on the Rise, and already, the album has been creating quite a stir in the streets.

It takes an exceptionally sophisticated writer to translate topics as solemn as incest, random violence and abject poverty into hit songs; and Queen Ifrica’s uncompromised opinions posit possible answers to these social disorders. Queen Ifrica achieves that rarefied balance throughout ‘Montego Bay’ and the strikingly complex Rastafarian female voice she brings to reggae is certain to engage the uninitiated as well as the seasoned fan.

“I want people who hear this record to understand what my aspirations are for this world,” Ifrica disclosed, adding, “All that effort we put towards dispute support, we can put towards solution support.”

BUSTA RHYMES AND THE ALLIANCE KILL DEM

"Funkmaster Flex and Mister Cee are ready to go as soon as they shoot it up," said an excited Busta Rhymes when he sent 'Kill Dem' to the Alliance for the remix. "I want them to kill people on the track, don’t hold anything back!"
Plucked from his recent 'Back on My B.S' album, Kill Dem sees Busta deejaying hardcore rhymes over a bouncing head-knocking beat.
"Bounty and Mavado were the only choices for this remix," added Busta, who recently did a remix for Mavado's 'So Blessed.'
The Ground God and Gully God have recorded their tracks and it will be mixed and released in a matter of days.....watch this space!

UNIFYING ‘UNPLUGGED’ PERFORMANCE BY DÁVILLE IN NY

Chart topping international reggae singer, DáVille, took time out to send an inspirational message of encouragement and hope to the youths of Jamaica, when he performed at ‘Unified Unplugged’ recently at the Denim Lounge in Brooklyn, New York.
An impassioned DáVille said, “The children must be a focus for us as they are our future.”
He recalled his days as a youth and some of the obstacles he had to overcome to achieve success.
DáVille and Fashozy Records have made a commitment that as part of their philanthropic focus, they will donate time and resources to help uplift the youths.
Backed by the New Kingston band, who were opening acts of the night, DáVille treated his New York fans to an energetic entertaining performance as he dished out his current chart-topping songs, ‘Missing You Right Now’ and ‘Never Gonna Cry’. Fans were also taken down memory lane with some of their favourite hit songs such as ‘On My Mind’, ‘In Heaven’, ‘I'm In Love With You’, ‘My Grade’ and ‘Fling It Up’, among others.
The crowd became his personal back-up singers as they sang along with him word for word. They wouldn’t allow DáVille to exit the stage and begged for more. When the singer wrapped up his performance, he couldn’t escape the several fans who lined up for him to sign autographs and take photos with them.
There was also an interactive question and answer segment in which fans could get up close and personal with the singer.
One satisfied fan was quoted as saying, “Any time I go to a Dáville show, I get my money’s worth. He is a great performer.”
Founder and president of the ‘Unified Unplugged’ entertainment series, Ronnie Tomlinson, explained that the event is about acts with a mission to restore and help build a potential future in the lives of the youths who are sometimes forgotten.
Through her promotion company, Destine Promotions, Ms. Tomlinson teams with the most prominent reggae and dancehall artistes to raise awareness for youths and their education.
In light of the recent alarming increase in youths dropping out of schools at the secondary level in Jamaica, Destine Promotions has decided to stage a series of ‘Unified Unplugged’ events aimed at raising awareness under the mantra ‘Choose Your Destiny – Be Educated’.
Throughout the staging of the events, sponsors and supporters will be recognised for their contributions to the proliferation of this ‘Stay In School’ campaign. During each event the artistes will do a video recording message addressed at the children telling them that they hold the power to their destiny.
All artistes who perform on ‘Unified Unplugged’ will be asked to introduce themselves to their fans, communicate their reasoning behind the lyrics they do and relate their upbringing to the audience.

80 PER CENT OF THE INDUSTRY PEOPLE TAKES PAYOLA, SAYS WAYNE MARSHALL

Dancehall artiste Wayne Marshall has voiced the opinion that payola (pay for play) spans 80 per cent of the industry and silences talented artistes whilst supporting Chris Blackwell's view that Jamaica's golden era of music is finished.
"Payola is very prevalent part of the business now," said Marshall who is in the Alliance group of artistes headed by Bounty Killer. "Money is all over the place on the charts, the radio stations ... payola is all over and that contributes to the stagnant nature of the business."
Payola had the effect of supporting the claim of Blackwell, who founded Island Records and was responsible for marketing reggae icon Bob Marley to the world.
"A foolish record will get played and pushed if a man has money behind it. So that is the record you will hear every day, so Chris Blackwell will be thinking, what the hell (happened) to this music, man? The golden age is gone because the new number one record would be off-key in certain parts, the content has nothing significant," he said.
Interestingly, 54 of the Top 100 Jamaican songs from 1962 are songs made in the 70s. The list was released in April by a panel of musicians and cultural officials led by the University of the West Indies.
The reggae-centric chart was dismissed by some, as it contained less than five dancehall songs. Others charged it reflected the declining quality of music.
Payola has long existed in the industry, but there isn't any way to test the prevalence of this clandestine activity. Marshall estimated that "80 per cent of the industry" operates on it. His evidence is the "stagnant" quality of popular music along with his insider knowledge. He said that songs may get airplay without pay in sections of the media but not others.
"A great song can get pushed by 60 per cent of the media without any money. Then the other 40 per cent is thinking...that the reason that it was played was due to money," he said at the ongoing 34th Annual Conference of the Caribbean Studies Association in Jamaica. "Payola is so prevalent, they are thinking that (others) are getting paid to play it and say, 'me nah go play it unless me get money', and then a good record suffers."
Marshall added that the industry is about money, "it's not about talent again".
He said that good artistes get pushed to the bottom of charts and excluded from prime time radio. "You have a lot of artistes out there that buss dem brain with good content, songs, melodies but never get the light of day because they don't have the juice to even burn 5,000 CDs to put out."
He added: "But if you do the research you find that this man has a big drugs man behind his career and him pay people and get plenty favours. If you aren't talented it won’t last but then if the money can last then (he will)."
His caveat was that artistes must support media in various ways outside of payola in order to influence play. Instead of pay for play utilise other models.
"I am not saying artistes should not support media. Because TV and radio play an important role in getting us out there. So if I feel like for all the work the media have done for me, I will give you a Christmas show or a gift, okay."

FLIPPA FLOSSES HIS WAY TO SUMFEST

Flippa Mafia, one of dancehall’s most in-demand rising stars, will showcase his talent on the world stage when he performs at the world’s greatest reggae festival, Sumfest.
Come Dancehall Night, Thursday July 23, Flippa, the King of Flossing, will be sure to represent — champagne-popping, his trademark designer suit and his Louis Vuitton satchel all in perfect place.
Sizzling hot with songs such as the number one single, Dem Yah and Dem Yah, Floss, Boasy, Look Alike, Mi Nuh Want No Man Like Mi and the controversial and thought-provoking Unfinished House, Flippa Mafia says he is looking forward to his Sumfest experience.
Flippa has definitely been enjoying a successful year and has secured a loyal fan base in and outside of the dancehall. Pundits say his strategic flossing was the injection the dancehall needed to get things back on a level.
“It’s all about having fun, enjoying what life has to offer and giving the fans a taste of something different,” Flippa says of his money-throwing, gimmicks, and his tendency to pop bottles of champagne and pour them on the stage.
"I always put fans first and it's my duty to ensure that with my performance they get their money's worth," a smiling Flippa Mafia said.

POLICE WANT POOR AND BOASY

Oh Oh, Poor and Boasy is a wanted man!

Poor and Boasy, real name Omar Johnson, has found himself on the wrong side of the law, as he is accused of being involved in a stabbing incident which occurred last week.
THE WEEKEND STAR has learnt that Johnson is now wanted in connection with the stabbing of Lindon Clarke, a resident of Aenon Town, Clarendon, where the incident allegedly occurred.
Checks with the Spaldings police confirmed that a report was made on Saturday, after which an effort was made to nab Johnson.
A policeman said Johnson was expected to attend a dance which was being held in Spaldings, also in the parish.

no-show

The efforts of the police were, however, thwarted, as Johnson reportedly did not turn up.
Corporate Area police stations have since been briefed, the policeman added.
Clarke, who contacted THE WEEKEND STAR, said he was stabbed about 1 a.m. last Friday, while at the Miss Aenon Town contest at the Aenon Town All-Age School.
While playing a game of cards, Clarke said he got into a heated argument with Poor and Boasy.
"First him seh 'a wah do yuh country bwoy?' and mi ask him if him feel seh town mek anybody a bad man," Clarke said. They then exchanged expletives.
"Mi leave and go inside the fête fi go enjoy miself and about three minutes after being in there him come see me," he continued.
Clarke said he was stabbed several times and had to run in order to escape. One of his friends drove him to hospital.
He received nine stab wounds: three in his side, four in his back, one in his hand and one in his belly. He was hospitalised and placed on a drip.
Clarke reported the matter to the police on Saturday. He, however, feels the police are lagging in making an arrest.
When THE WEEKEND STAR contacted Poor and boasy and queried the incident on Sunday, he dismissed the argument by saying he heard rumours that he was the subject of an attack and not the attacker.
"Mi hear seh dem find mi body a Alligator Pond, seh mi get stab up and dead," he claimed.

no details

He did, however, admit to being in the country but did not spare details of the trip.
"Up to last night him deh a one bar a drink. Him deh a Aenon Town more than how him deh a town. Right now, him supposed to deh a Aenon Town," an angry Clarke said.
"A nuff people see dat (stabbing incident) but de police nuh come arrest him. Right now, mi a pree fi go report it a Mandeville Police station."
Poor and Boasy was the male winner of the recently concluded Magnum Kings and Queens of Dancehall competition.

ELE SPARKLES AT HOT 97 SUMMER JAM

It could easily have been Elephant Man on parade inside the the Giants Stadium in New Jersey, at the annual Hot 97 Summer Jam held on June 7.

It was 12 minutes of high, irrepressible energy, teasing punch lines, and riveting dance moves as Ele paraded his dancing skills and his lyrical prowess to a wide cross section of fans inside the stadium.

A colourful Elephant Man entered centrestage at about 7:30 pm, right after the fellow dancehall act, Mavado, made his exit. He opened his set with one of his many hit tunes that have locked the place, Bad Man Forward and, not surprisingly, had the Giants Stadium rocking. Trying to get in as much as possible within the time allotted, the Energy God touched on the chorus of hit songs such as Gully Creeper, Jook Gal, and Sweep and left the dancehall loving crowd wanting more.

And, of course, he left them with Nuh Linga on their minds as he used this anthem, complete with dance moves, to close his set.

Among the other international acts who performed on Hot 97 Summer Jam were Mary J. Blige, T-Pain, The Dream — who performed after Ele — Young Jeezy, JadaKiss, Jim Jones and Juelz Santana.

Elephant Man is one of the big name acts confirmed to perform at Reggae Sumfest Dancehall Night in Montego Bay on Thursday July 23.

Serani's "No Games" is # 1 on America's reggae iTunes Chart

Alliance star Serani's bonafide hit "No Games" has landed at the #1 spot on America's reggae iTunes Chart for the first time, knocking Bob Marley's timeless classic "Three Little Birds" off the top spot. Having been selling thousands of downloads and ringtones for months, No Games has been flirting with the #1 spot for some time, but now replaces Bob Marley's anthem, that sells an average of 5,500 a week in downloads on iTunes.

"No Games is actually still gaining in spins across the country," said Serani's manager. "This record just won't go away. It’s still getting added to playlists in many states across the country every week so it continues to spread."

Serani recently recorded a remix for No Games with songstress Shontelle, while on tour in the UK. Shontelle scored big in the UK with her recent hit "T-Shirt" and being label mates Universal Music made the match and hooked up the two artists. Universal/Island Records will release the No Games + remix package digitally on July 6th.

"Shontelle was great to work with," said Serani. "She's a very talented songwriter and she has a great personality so the chemistry was good in the studio. The remix is hot."

‘FYAH MUMA’, QUEEN IFRICA SETS TORTOLA ABLAZE!

The ‘fyah muma’, Queen Ifrica, recently returned from a blazing hot performance at the BVI Music festival, held at the Cane Garden Bay Beach in Tortola, British Virgin Islands, last week.
There, the female sing-jay delivered a healthy dose of her popular songs, as she performed favourites from her upcoming ‘Montego Bay’ album, like Coconut Shell, Lioness On The Rise, Daddy (original version) and Daddy (in Spanish), which earned her the biggest forward for the night.
Queen Ifrica, who had entered the stage at 11pm, paused during her fiery set and asked the audience if she could sing in Spanish, the response, a resounding “yes”! She started the first verse and it was pulled up at least five times, as screams went on for at least a minute.

Keep It To Yourself was her final tune and the audience sang as Queen Ifrica left the stage. Despite their cry for more, the time just didn’t permit.

Other acts to have graced the stage included the likes of Sizzla, Serani and Daddy Yankee.
In the meantime, Queen Ifrica continues to maintain a strong presence on local and international charts, as her Far Away single is sitting in the #8 position on the Hype TV Top 10 Reggae Music Chart and is at #19 on the Top 20 Reggae Singles Chart. In addition, Queen Ifrica’s Lioness On The Rise has climbed to the #2 spot on the South Florida Top 25 Reggae Singles Chart and is currently in the #4 position on the New York Reggae Chart.
With the video for Queen Ifrica’s Lioness On The Rise premiering just last Friday (June 5th) on RETV, much more success on local and international charts is expected from the single.
Queen Ifrica also has a number of upcoming appearances scheduled for weeks to come, as she and her staff will travel to New York to do a week of press promotions on her upcoming debut album, ‘Montego Bay’. She will also be doing a U.S. tour along with Tony Rebel and Fyakin in July.
Since her musical career soared to new heights after teaming up with veteran reggae singer/producer Tony Rebel, back in 1998, the soulful queen has not looked back, as she continues to rule the dancehall with her stirring mix of spiritually empowering anthems, lover’s rock tunes and searing social commentaries.
Now, all attention is focused on Queen Ifrica’s much anticipated, dynamic debut album for VP Records, ‘Montego Bay’, which is due for release on June 16.

Bounty Killer and crew rushes stage at Bung Bang Connect

Shouts of 'Nineties' and 'Gaza' peppered the air as a faceoff between rival factions of the Portmore Empire and the Alliance took centrestage at the Club Amaura in Queens, New York. Bounty Killer and an entourage of men walked up to the backstage area of the club during an energetic performance by Blak Ryno and Jahvinci, cutting short their set before Ryno could deliver the song dissing the Killer. The situation got unbelievably tense and the strong contingent of Gaza followers got up in the face of other men aligned to Bounty Killer before security was able to whisk away both Ryno and Jahvinci before things got out of hand. Hip hop star Ron Browz reportedly left the building without getting a chance to perform. Bounty Killer closed the show. Ryno got huge forwards for Thug Anthem, Dare to Try and Real Stingers, while Jahvinci rocked Amazura with his recent number one hit, Watch Yu Friends, that had the small crowd singing in unison.

MR. VEGAS #1 ON FIVE CHARTS

Mr. Vegas runaway hit, I Am Blessed, is carving out a bit of chart history in the modern day era of Jamaican reggae-dancehall music. The single, which was released over two months ago, now occupies the number one position simultaneously on at least five major music charts, underlining the dominance of the song here in Jamaica.

The single is #1 on the Jamaica Music Countdown charts, hosted by Richie B of HOT 102, while simultaneously rocking the top spot on the weekly ER charts, the RE TV dancehall charts, HYPE TV charts and the Digicel Caribbean top 30 charts. Two weeks ago, the song also topped the BBC 1xtra dancehall
charts. In the meantime, the video, which features a reverse narrative concept employed by acclaimed video director Jay Will, has also hit the #1 spot on the CVM Hitlist chart, the HYPE VTX Countdown as well as a video chart on Synergy TV in Trinidad.

"It is a rare feat to be at the top of so many charts at the same times and it shows Mr. Vegas' universal appeal and the strength of his fan base in Jamaica. I Am Blessed is easily one of the biggest songs
of his career and the song is just beginning to catch fire on urban stations in the United States and in England, so it augurs well for Mr. Vegas," manager Ray Alexander said.

The I Am Blessed video is also hovering at the #2 spot on the RE MVP charts.

Mr. Vegas is booked solid for the rest of the summer with shows lined up for every weekend until the end of August. He will begin his European tour on July 13, and he is presently compiling singles to
produce an album this summer.

Vegas has an uncanny knack of making hits. After jumping into the spotlight with Nike Air, his next single, "Heads High", had a successful chart run in the UK and a #69 peak on the Billboard R & B
chart. In 1998, his debut album, Heads High, was released, which hit #5 on the US Reggae chart. Vegas won a MOBO for Best Reggae Artist for the Heads High album as well while the year 2000 saw the single "Hot Gal Today" featuring Sean Paul becoming a minor hit on the US R&B charts, peaking at #66.In 2001, he issued Damn Right, featuring guest appearances from Shaggy and Big Yard; this album went to #2 on the US Reggae chart. 2004 saw the release of the Pull Up LP, and the title track scraped the bottom of the Billboard Top 200, peaking at #98 (as well as #68 on the R&B chart). In 2006 he did a Soca collaboration with Machel Montano from Trinidad and Tobago Dance With You on
Machel's B.O.D.Y. album. His 2007 album, Hot It Up, featured songs such as the Jamaican hits "Hot Wuk", "Taxi Fare" and "Tek Weh Yuhself".

DáVille confirmed for International Night 2 of Reggae Sumfest 2009

Fashozy international recording artiste, DáVille, is confirmed to perform on this year’s International Night 2 at Reggae Sumfest on Saturday, July 25 at Catherine Hall, Montego Bay venue.
It will be the second time that the singer will be performing at the gigantic summer entertainment event. He performed on the event in 2007 where he gave a superb performance, which resulted in him being booked for several local and overseas shows.
The singer, whose ‘Missing You Right Now’ went to #1 on most local and overseas charts, is still one of the most heavily requested and played songs on the airwaves and in the dancehalls locally and internationally.
Another single, ‘Never Gonna Cry’, is also popping up on media charts, playlists, Internet radio stations and blog sites around the world and is fast heading for the top. It has just entered Richie B’s Top 20 charts. The song is touted to be the next big hit song for the singer. A video for the song in also being edited and will be released soon.
DáVille is putting the final touches to a brand new album expected to be out soon. Studio engineers and persons who were privy to hear some of the tracks all say that the album is definitely going to be a “must have”.
In April, DáVille gave an entertaining still talked about performance at New York’s top radio personality Squeeze’s Rock With Squeeze Mondays Party at the SOB.
He then flew to Dominica where he dazzled Dominicans at the Krazy Kokonuts Club with a devastating performance. DáVille can next be seen in performance on tonight, June 3 at a show dubbed ‘DáVille Unplugged’ at Club Denim in New York.
Since the A.R.P. singer went solo, his career continues to soar to higher heights. He has recorded a number of chart topping hit songs such as ‘Always On My Mind’, ‘Yesterday’, ‘Can’t Get Over You’, ‘This Time I Promise’, ‘Storm’ ‘Missing You’ and ‘In Heaven’.

Asylum's Closure End Of An Era

The recent closure the Asylum night club in New Kingston certainly marks the end of a new era. Similar to when its sister club, Cactus, in Portmore slammed its doors shut. Of course, the suggestion that Asylum has gone beyond its "lifetime" as stated by owner Brian "Ribbi" Chung, is an important factor, but so too the opening of Quad night club, along with the proliferation of street dances in the last couple of years.

These dances- some of them in gated venues, for example Weddy Weddy -started out being totally free and those that do charge, the cover is nominal and in most cases women don't pay. And, the dances are plentiful and flourishing. On any given night, one can easily find one, and in some cases up to three open-air dances which enjoy good patronage, clearly an indication of the vibe the people.

But then, this too is a cycle, as it has happened before when the jamming places were venues such as House of Leo, rather than the clubs. Stone Love, resident House of Leo sound, later moved into the club (read Asylum) where they played at the weekly Dancehall night session.

Quite interesting, is the addition of a new night club to the busy New Kingston strip with the opening of the Pure/Plush night club just last week. It is said that anything that owner Kimani Robinson puts his hand to turns to pure gold, so any debate of its success ought to be purely academic.

ETANA BAPTISED AT THE EMMANUEL APOSTOLIC CHURCH!

Rastafarian reggae singer Etana made an important step towards bridging the idealogical divide between Rastafarianism and orthodox Christianity yesterday when she was baptized at the Emmanuel Apostolic church on Slipe Road in Kingston.

Etana, speaking in an exclusive interview with one876 this morning, said that the move was spontaneous and that most people in the congregation were shocked when she stepped forward to be baptized.

“No one knew…everyone was thrown off; they were shocked. When they saw a Rastafarian walking up the aisle then to see me embrace them as a Rastafarian, that was unseen,” she said.

She described the actual baptism as an ongoing conversation between herself and God.

“Minister Blackman said ‘yu know yu can’t turn back?’ and I said ‘turn back from what?’ Because when you think about it,the way I live my life is not unclean, the way I speak, what I express through my music. I don’t wear pants. If I embrace Christianity as I would my mother, or my brother or any member of my family, it makes a statement. If I say ‘love’ just as a Rastafarian, then you expect it, but if I embrace Christianity and preach love, it makes a bigger statement about how things ought to be.”

Etana said that she is hoping that this move will help to unite

“We speak of unconditional love and unity yet we are so separated and divided. I want to do my part to help get rid of the prejudice and division, and convey the message that no matter your class, race, creed or colour, it should be about one love and we should leave the judgment to God,” she intoned passionately.

“Why are we confusing the youths? If there is only one God, why the division? What kind of doctrines are we supporting?”

Etana said that the content of her music will not change because of her new-found faith.

“Don’t expect me to sing only religious Pentecostal songs, I shall remain the voice of the people. I will continue to sing about real life situation and the experiences of our life together as a people.”
